[serious] Need advice. The HS I graduated from has disrespected me.
Hey guys. I need some help with a situation that recently came up. Thought I would turn to my nfl sports fam. Most of you guys were high level athletes so I know you will understand this.
Not to brag, but I was a legend at my HS. I was probably the 2nd or 3rd best overall player to some, but I would vote as #1 all day if we polled the local fan base. I was recently back for my weekly visit with my old ball coach (I graduated in 07). We were shooting the shit, talking about some old hits I laid out against Meridian. I was just getting to the best part where I made this crazy tackle, when a kid walked into his office. I didn’t think much of it out of the corner of my eye, these kids today are soft. We did 3 a days and I barely got tired. Then I notice it - he has a 52 on his shirt. My old number. For a second I thought coach was pranking me. I started laughing pretty loudly. Letting him know, yeah man I can take some shit, good one coach. He is looking at me funny and the kid walks out, embarrassed (probably crying) because he could tell shit would get real if it wasn’t a joke. But I was laughing really loudly so they knew, I can take a joke. I am pretty laid back and chill, I listen to Red Wine by Bob Marley almost every weekend.
Coach then says, “You always come here and act like you own the place, what’s your deal?” So I can tell something is way wrong for him to think I am acting around him. I have told coach at least 1,000 times not to give my number out until I approved of a player. In the 18 years I have been dropping by weekly, I have never seen anyone close to who I was back then. Again, if we polled everyone and voted, no doubt I am voted #1 (for 07). So obviously I am going to make sure it is someone actually worthy of wearing my SHIT! I told coach I was going to go take care of it. He probably got bullied into it by some Gen B parents, who never even knew who I was and what I did. (I also got injured and probably would have easily been at a top NAIA program (which some would vote as better than NCAA)). But nope, he said he was tired of the “weirdness” and wanted me to move on. I was shocked. I kind of blacked out from there, similar to homecoming night (that’s a whole other story).
The cops said I am not allowed to go back, ever. How can you ban a legend? Also it is my understanding it is a PUBLIC school, like a PUBLIC park, how can you ban someone from the park? You can’t. Its public nature like a public school is. He said if I sat on the benches outside ever again I would get arrested (again). He wasn’t even on the team in HS, how can he even be a cop. No brotherhood.
I wanted to talk to the Principal but I am worried SHE wont understand (yes the principal is a woman, odd). My solution is simple, we officially retire my number and have a ceremony and I will apologize to coach for “defecating” (whatever that means) on his desk. How do you think I should address this in court Monday? The judge was the center on our team, so good chance I get off and I thought maybe I request he order the school to retire my number. Thoughts? Any advice? For others who got their number retired, how sweet was it? Did you put it on your resume?
