Electrical Issue in Apartment
Hello! I reside in the Graduate Hospital, Philadelphia area in a small complex with just a handful of apartments. I noticed a plastic-y smell around one of my outlets that something plugged into it. I have since unplugged it, but still smell the same smell a bit closer to the outlet (like inches if I bend down). Upon searching it, it says a possibility may be electrical overheating. I am insanely anxious over this that i convinced myself i might be smelling a rotten fish smell too. Again, it very well could be anxiety.
I got a voltage tester and plug in outlet tester. The voltage tester reads that the wall above a certain outlet is “hot” meaning it has voltage right behind it and the plastic plates also say it is “hot” as well. Now for the plug in tester it states that every single receptacle in this apartment has an open ground meaning it’s not grounded. That is a HUGE safety concern and can cause a fire. I’m with a larger realty group in an older building. From experience their maintenance department is awful. When I moved in there was a gas leak they kept putting off and I lived in the apartment with gas leaking from the stove for almost a month. Assuming that open grounds are against building codes and I want to reach out for them to fix this with the fear of a fire, how can I request maintenance for this? Do I state I checked the outlets and they all say open ground? It is my first time living on my own and this is giving me awful anxiety. Thank you!
