My Mechanic Shop Just Broke Up With Me...
Hello!
This will be a rant but I also want to understand what perspectives mechanics have of this, and what to do in the future.
So today, I went to my usual mechanic shop to get a vehicle I just purchased inspected, like a usual multi-point, and I did this for 2 years with my last vehicle before it got totaled out, so it’s assumed that the shop doesn’t gaf. But today was different, because the car I purchased had a lot of issues with it, and they were quoting a lot like usual, but I declined, because 1, I don’t have it like that, as a broke college student, 2, I can usually do all of the work they do by myself, like sparks, radiator, filters, oil changes, etc, and 3, they just charge a lot, to where, even if I did want to give them service, it wouldn’t make sense (e.g. 130 for an cabin filter swap). I would also like to add that I would go to them for point inspections like every 4-6 months to check for brakes, engine leaks, etc, and I even spent near 2k just for diagnostics alone, like coolant, refrigerant, and engine leaks, but the initial multi-points are free.
Anyways, they said that I am draining their resources and never taking them up on their quotes, and they “banned” me from their establishment, because I am doing more free inspections than the actual paid services. Also, they said that their stuff is more expensive because they have professionals trained working on these things, when I compared their prices of service to Firestone (and ik I shouldn’t have said that, but I was all over the place, trying to get this thing fixed). Mind you, I’ve been doing my tire services with FS, for years, do my diagnostic and buy parts from the mechanic, and then do the rest of the work myself, so again I thought they were cool with it.
Anyways, I know what I said was bad, with the comparing, but is this usual to refuse a service that you offer if a customer is abusing it, or maybe was it what I said, and not valuing the service? When they texted me for feedback, I told them they can start charging for the inspection, and then waive it, if you buy one of their services, to mitigate this, because I would’ve gladly paid 50-100 for a diagnostic, but now I am banned from this place. Another question is where should I go next for MPIs? Should I stick with the mom & pop/independent shops or go to the commercial places?
