Should I move to the UK / go to grad school in the UK?
Hi! I'm a 24 F aspiring filmmaker (writer/director) currently living in LA. My day job is the Hollywood assistant life, but my company (a talent pod) is shuttering by end of year and I'm thinking about my next steps. I've been interviewing for other Hollywood assistant jobs in the studio system, but just keep feeling this feeling of emptiness that I'm trying to ignore. I don't want to ignore it anymore.
Since living in LA post-undergrad (2 years now), I've written a feature film (dark comedy coming-of-age) that I'm really proud of and keep saying I want to shoot. But I haven't made any progress. I feel blocked by my day job, scheduling and rolling calls and sending emails, and when the days over I find it hard to switch brains and get this feature film off the ground. I also am not motivated by the fact that it's expensive as shit to shoot in LA. Not to mention dreading asking my friends and family for money when the economy is so shit.
I've also just been feeling a general creative block while living here -- to put it simply, I don't like this city. I don't like the culture, I don't love the kind of people it attracts. I always feel like I have to pretend to be someone I'm not to succeed. And since I consider myself highly emotionally intelligent, it's easy for me to put a mask on and be that "Hollywood assistant / aspiring producer go getter / networker," but in doing so I'm distancing myself more and more from my inner artist and what brought me to LA in the first place. It feels like I'm selling my soul. And while I have written a feature, I haven't felt inspiration strike on any other ideas. I'm starting to feel like any more time I spend in this city is a mistake. That it's hindering me, despite me moving here for the exact opposite.
Then, I take one trip to Edinburgh, Scotland for a family wedding last week -- and I fall in love with it. The city, the architecture, the nature, the creative energy (heightened because of The Fringe), the way Scots would welcome me, their sense of humor, etc. I had 2 feature ideas in my 3 days there. And in LA, I would sit in coffee shop after coffee shop wracking my brain, drawing a blank for 2 years.
I dreaded flying back to LA, back to the dirty city where everyone is silently judging and using one another to get ahead.
Basically, I'm pondering next steps. I think I should be listening to my gut about how I felt in the UK -- after all, my ancestors are Scottish and came over to Nova Scotia in the early 1800s. Something in me feels connected to the land and the people. And I don't think I should ignore how my artistic self felt more alive there. But I also know that it's easy to romanticize a city you don't know very well. And that if I did want to pursue film, people would probably recommend London over any city in Scotland (which I would still be excited about).
Then there's the question of how to get the Visa, which would either have to be through a job (hard to come by) or a student Visa, meaning I'd have to pay for grad school. But are there filmmaking MFAs in the UK that are actually worth it? I know a lot of indie filmmakers I admire made their first features with the support of an MFA. But is that actually just a crutch that would only put me in more debt that I don't need? (Still have $25k debt from undergrad).
And, am I already living in the country with the best MFAs? Should I just be applying to NYU? Should I not be going to school at all? Would Brits/Scots even welcome an American into their film industry?
So many questionssss!! I just hesitate to commit to another assistant job and feel like I'm wasting my days away when I could be working towards making my MOVIES! But bills have to be paid at the end of the day, so there are only so many options.
HELP! Any advice, stories, etc is welcomed.
