Recently started using a baitcaster. Do I need to tune the tension and brakes, or can I just use my thumb to stop the line?

I’ve recently started using a baitcaster. It’s been fine with me so far. Every time I cast out I’ve just been stopping the line with my thumb before it hits the water.

I’ve heard the proper way to do it is to tune the tension and magnetic brakes first before you cast.

Should I start tuning the baitcaster to the weight of my lure or is it fine to keep using my thumb without tuning anything?
