What you absolutely NEED to steal for your Castle High campaign
I've seen more than one comment on here feeling a bit underwhelmed with the mechanics section of the Castle High campaign frame. And we get it, Hope and Fear needed the level 1 complexity campaign frame, so no harm done.
Still, some people did complain that we didn't have a unifying sporting event in the Castle High campaign frame, they even allude to this in the "Castle High Towers" section when prompting players to choose their tower, specifically star tower
If players choose Star tower, consider how a competition or tournament at the school plays a prominent part in the mystery of the missing kids.
And you know, we have all seen this movie more than once, the slobs vs snobs, the scrappy underdog competition. You have Monsters University, Pitch Perfect, The Mighty Ducks, Bring it On (and the 80s movie which shall not be named). But there is no culturally relevant sporting event in the campaign frame to bring it to fruition, not even an environment sheet.
And let's face it, making a fantasy sport is one of the most difficult things to do. It's rare to see them done well in regular media even, the Blitzballs, the Pro-Bendings, the (Broom Sport which shall not be named) and so on, and it's even more difficult to make them playable as a sidebar in a TTRPG
Well, friends, lucky for us, our friends from Darrington Press and DNGN club got us covered with the newly released Age of Umbra Sallowlands: Road to Nowhere.
Take the pod racing mechanics and turn them into a flying racing event that sweeps up the whole school! Make the necessary adjustments, replace the mad max vibes with Mario Kart cartoon violence, force some arbitrary rules to make aerial racing tracks and you have the PERFECT fantasy sport for your fantasy high school!
