Question about the 2010 animated movie The Illusionist!

Hey, y'all. I'm thinking of watching this movie while I'm in Edinburgh this month, and I've seen bits and pieces of it. My question is: Is this movie meant to have subtitles? I've seen some bits of people speaking French, but no subtitles. Is that normal, or were those clips just without them? I wanna make sure I find the right version to watch. Thank you.
