Why long Claude Code sessions start sounding the same

Discussion

During my research into long Claude Code sessions, I kept noticing something odd: the instructions were still there, but their influence was fading.

Which is weird. If the agent can still see “be concise,” why does it keep producing long reports?

My working explanation is competition. One sentence asks for a short answer. Then Claude Code reads pages of formal reports with headings, long paragraphs, and layers of explanation. When it writes next, that repeated shape is sitting beside the instruction.

I use style contagion as a working label for this.

And the drift goes past word choice. Paragraph length, cadence, confidence, even how an answer decides it is finished can start leaning toward whatever filled the session.

I do not call it from one response. I look across several unrelated outputs. Same polished entrance? Same route through claim, evidence, and mechanism? Same neat ending even when the thought could just stop?

I use that repeated architecture as a warning, not a detector.

My response is simple: bring the intended voice back right before composition. Keep a few good examples beside the task. Enforce any hard format outside the model. I use this as an operating practice, not proof that re-priming solves it.

If you pull up your last few unrelated agent outputs, what shape keeps coming back?
