Yankees fail to complete sweep in 1-0 loss to Mariners

The Mariners shut out the Yankees 1-0, as the Yankees failed to complete the sweep for a second series in a row. Max Fried took the mound for the Yankees and faced off against Logan Gilbert.

Fried navigated around a two-out walk and picked up a couple of strikeouts to work a scoreless top of the first inning.

In the bottom of the first inning, Trent Grisham, Ben Rice and Spencer Jones were retired in order.

The Mariners jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning thanks to a solo shot from Weston Wilson.

That run would be the only run the Mariners needed, and I didn't get to watch much of the game today, so I am going to cut the recap here.

The Yankees will now head to Toronto to begin a three-game series against the Blue Jays tomorrow. Gerrit Cole will get the starting nod for the Yankees and face off against Shane Beibier. First pitch is slated for 7:15 p.m. ET on Apple TV.

My thoughts on the game: This seemed like the most predictable outcome after the Yankees offense exploded for 10 runs yesterday; I just knew we would get a shutout today. I only got to watch Fried in the first inning today, but from what I saw, he looked good. Unfortunately, he was tagged with the loss due to a lack of run support. Ryan Yarbrough, who I haven't been a big fan of this season, did his job today, picking up for big outs. And I have to give credit where credit is due: Yarbrough is quietly having a solid season with a 3.57 ERA. Yerry De los Santos was lights out, picking up five huge outs, with three of them coming via the strikeout. Fernando Cruz, who has struggled a little at times over the last few weeks, worked a nice and easy 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning on just eight pitches. The offense did basically nothing with just four hits and no runs; two of those hits came from Garcia. Frustrating game today; the pitching dominated, but you can't win if you dont score. Solid series win, but with how well the Rays are playing, winning one straightaway, the Yankees needed more than a series win. The Yankees are now 6.5 games back from first place in the AL East and have just a 12.7% chance to win the division, according to Fangraphs. Anything is possible; we saw the Tigers had a 10.5-game lead in the AL Central on August 31 last year and managed to blow that lead, but with how much the Rays have been winning, the Yankees have zero room for error. On to tomorrow, as the Yankees need to get the bats going or else they will have no chance at winning the division. Sorry for the short recap and late upload today; I had to work right in the middle of the game and only got to watch a little bit.
