How long do I need to stay at a new job?
I know the optimistic answer would be, “don’t stay at a job you don’t like” but we all know that attitude isn’t a reflection of the current market.
A bit of backstory: I’ve been moving in an upward trajectory in marketing new homes - coordinator to manager. After 2 years at my marketing manager job, I left because although I liked the work, salary, and benefits, my particular office was extremely, extremely toxic. I was unemployed for about 2.5 months before accepting a job as marketing manager for a startup in the hospitality industry. Because it’s brand new and small and I’m in charge of the marketing department, I negotiated a director title. I’m really excited about this path and industry but this particular position, because it’s a startup, has a lower than average salary and benefits.
I want to be able to use this experience in a positive way on my resume to continue growing in the hospitality industry. I know how I “spin it” will be a factor, but realistically, how long do I need to stay at this job for it to “look good on my resume” ?
