Older MPC gain pots & Sample Edit Trim volume?
Did older MPCs like the MPC2000XL have stereo drift on the volume knob? It seems to be an inherent trait of analog hardware design rather than a defective unit.
Also in Sample Edit, the software bypasses project faders, pad levels, insert FX, and the Main Mixer. This means there's no way to lower the raw waveform volume in Trim mode unless I turn down the physical gain pot on the back. From what I see, there's no digital fader or Q-Link setting for this.
I can use Process -> Gain Change, but that alters the sound in the track view, so I have to remember to undo it later.
I researched this and ended up testing a TRS 1/4" to 90 degree right angle dual TS Y-splitter cable out of the MPC into a SubZero HC1 passive headphone controller. I maxed out the MPC main volume and controlled the level on the HC1 instead. This keeps the MPC output at maximum signal-to-noise ratio and bypasses the MPC pot drift, even though the HC1 has a tiny bit of its own drift at very low settings.
I also preferred this analog setup over running a USB interface like a Zoom AMS-22 out of the USB port, because running through the main analog outs keeps the internal MPC DAC character intact rather than offloading conversion to the interface.
Am I right with this shit at the end or what? How do you guys deal with these two things on your setups?
