โ๏ธ DOJ Adds Former SPLC Intelligence Chief To Fraud Case: Superseding indictment expands prosecution over informant payments ๐
Federal prosecutors unsealed a superseding indictment on August 12, 2026, adding former Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) Intelligence Project director Heidi Beirich as a defendant in the Justice Department's criminal case involving the nonprofit. Beirich is charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to make false statements to a federally insured bank, and conspiracy to commit concealment money laundering. She was scheduled to make an initial appearance in federal court in Riverside, California. Her attorney, Michael Proctor, said she intends to contest the charges and argued the case amounts to a vindictive prosecution.
The superseding indictment expands a case first filed in April 2026, when the SPLC was indicted and pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors allege the organization failed to disclose millions of dollars in payments to confidential informants embedded in extremist groups while making false statements to financial institutions. According to court filings, approximately $4.1 million in donor funds was allegedly routed through the informant program in ways prosecutors contend were concealed from donors and banks.
Prosecutors further allege that Beirich maintained a romantic relationship with a confidential informant identified in court filings as "F-9", who allegedly received more than $1.2 million through the program. The indictment also alleges that approximately $140,000 in donor funds was transferred into a joint bank account shared by Beirich and the informant. Court filings further allege the informant unlawfully removed 25 boxes of records from the headquarters of a neo-Nazi organization in 2014, material prosecutors say later formed the basis of an SPLC publication. Beirich has denied wrongdoing through her attorney, and those allegations have not been proven in court.
Attorney General Todd Blanche said the expanded indictment reflects the Justice Department's continuing investigation into the case. Court records show a pretrial conference is scheduled for August 19, 2026, with jury selection currently set to begin on October 5, 2026, in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Alabama, unless the schedule changes.
