My theory is pretty weak, but it mostly stems from the movie that plays in the cinema, and the betrayal that occurs at the end of/start of/before the game.

Firstly, I want to say that the cinema’s circle of rabbits aren’t necessarily rabbits, but they could be hares too. However one of them most certainly is a rabbit, as that would be Girl/The Sister, who is killed by the other rabbits, or hares. The symbolism of this would be that the Rabbit is a symbol of community, and felt safe alongside the other rabbits, only to find that she is a lone rabbit, being tricked by four hares who are intent on killing her on secret.

What is the significance of a hare? To be honest I don’t know, it’s mostly that rabbits are conventionally cute, whereas hares are seen as rather uncanny as they look so rabbit like and yet are so clearly not rabbits. Maybe that’s why I’m thinking of this. The fact that the characters who partook in the murder/sacrifice were all children leans into the idea of mistaking them as rabbits, as of course rabbits are seen as innocent as are children.

The statues that are found throughout the game of course bring this idea into question, as they are all clearly statues of rabbits, as we see in the statue of the five together.

I suppose this theory is all speculation, and really it comes down to what do you find more convincing: four rabbits betraying and murdering one, or four hares pretending to be rabbits murdering the sole rabbit?
If anyone wants to expand or question my theory, feel free to do so. I don’t 100% believe in it myself after all.

Rabbits, right? Or hares?
