going insane from a hostel-mate connection

I really need get this off my chest otherwise I’d go completely insane. A couple months ago I (26F) was staying at a hostel while traveling and this one afternoon I had probably the most intense eye contact I ever had in my life with this incredibly attractive man. Mind you this wasn’t the regular eye-contact-then-look-away-immediately — every time our eyes would meet we would hold it for about two or three seconds before looking away. gosh it gives me such a thrill just thinking about it now, there was a look in his eyes that’s difficult to describe but just felt charged. this happened maybe five or six times throughout one afternoon.

We were at the front room area of the hostel where I was sitting on the bench with my laptop working and he was playing ping pong and billiards with his friend. every time there would be a break in his conversation with his friend he would look at me and I would look at him. Twice his ping pong ball was tossed over to where I was sitting and he would come over to I was and I would hand it to him.

I should mention, the night before, we happened to be both in the hostel kitchen, just the two of us preparing food, and I noticed he kept stealing glances at me and then looking away when I would look up. I also noticed he was quite shy and mostly kept to himself, often with his headphones on.

HOWEVER - and here’s the part that bothers me most - the night after that afternoon I had promised to meet a friend of mine, so I had to leave my hostel in the evening, and now I can’t help but feeling like he thought I’d maybe given him false hope or led him on. The following day we happened to have lunch at the same time again just the two of us (lol) and he was really withdrawn and keeping to himself again. He was still polite and said hi, but it was as if the previous day never happened. The day after that I had to leave the hostel for my flight and I think of him all the time far more than I’d like to admit.

So my two questions for you guys now are:

1. Was this guy into me at all?? did I misread things???
2. Do you think he thinks I led him on that evening by leaving the hostel after all that eye contac?
3. How do I get over this lol it’s been three months since this happened and it still bothers me 😆
