The Biggest reason most traders never become profitable
Most traders don't fail because their strategy is terrible. They fail because they never actually find out whether their strategy works.
A lot of traders will take 10 losses, change the setup, change the timeframe, add an indicator, then repeat the whole process. Without testing, you have no idea whether you're dealing with a bad strategy or a completely normal losing streak.
1. They trade ideas, not evidence
If you've only traded a setup 20 or 30 times, it's hard to know much about it. You might just be looking at random variance.
Backtesting 100+ trades gives you something useful to work with. You can see the actual win rate, average risk to reward, losing streaks, and which market conditions the setup performs best in. I use tradespark for this because it makes testing and reviewing setups much easier.
2. They change strategies too quickly
I've seen traders abandon a setup after a handful of losses, then jump onto whatever looks good that week.
The important thing is knowing what your strategy's normal performance actually looks like. If your backtest shows that five consecutive losses happens regularly, experiencing five losses live doesn't automatically mean the strategy is broken.
3. They don't review what they actually do
A backtest tells you whether the idea has potential. A journal tells you whether you're executing it properly.
Screenshots and trade notes make patterns obvious. Maybe your long trades are consistently better than your shorts, or your results collapse when you move your stop, trade outside your planned session, or take setups that don't meet your rules.
Once you can separate strategy problems from execution problems, improving becomes much more straightforward.
