Help Me Decide Between Jobs
Hey guys,
Posting here because I’m looking for some advice and y’all are more active than the dedicated instrumentation sub. I have been working for a very large oil company doing 14/14 rotational work in the Permian Basin as an IC&E tech. I end up clearing about 170-200k depending on callout volume and how big our bonus is.
I live in Florida and received an offer for a unionized I&C gig that pays 50/hr, you travel around (40-80% travel) florida for outages aka turnarounds (farthest plant is about 3 hours from me) and get per diem while you’re doing it. You get (two) unpaid months off a year, one in winter and one in summer. They still give you a few weeks off PTO. Estimated OT a year is 500-800 and per diem is 150 a day or they pay your hotel and you get 80 a day. Plus mileage for drive time and all that other stuff. From my calculations it would be 130-170k give or take.
Only reason I was looking around is because I’ve been in the oil fields for 6 years and I’m starting to get a little stir crazy I guess. Not sure if I should just suck it up and take the money I have or if the grass really is greener. I’m sure a utility is a lot more laid back and it’s just I&C minus the e. Let me know what you guys think please.
thank you guys all so much you are my heroes. All the electricians at my job are the only funny ones. Bunch of PLC nerds in IC&E.
