Are people lying about these good heads for bargain prices or am I doing it wrong?

Discussion

I enjoy refurbishing and gifting axes to my friends and family that use them. I like that I can put together a far better axe than anything on the market with just a couple hours carving out a handle that is custom made to balance the weight and pattern, an hour on the grinder, and another half hour hand-filing.

I've had an eye out for good axe heads for the past 11 years after I somehow got into chopping professionally and learned the tool. I peruse ebay and craigslist for likely deals every few weeks, I go to antique shops, I go to garage and estate sales, I've been to a few flea markets. I've never got a deal like what I see almost daily on this sub. I don't mind mushrooming or a worn toe as long as it won't take numerous hours on the grinder to get it into shape. As long as it has some life and a high centerline, I'm interested. Idk the last time I got one for under $25, and that was a very unique shop that a friend found across the country from me. Usually I'm in the $50-$65 range. Best ever was a 3.5# Dayton Kelly-TT Perfect with factory paint/grind for $40. Where are people getting these dang cheap heads? Are they more obsessive than me because that seems like a disorder if so. Is the PNW just not the place to be for this? Are they maybe lying?

It's really a pretty cheap hobby otherwise. I have an arborist friend that I've bought very cheap clear straight grained wide-ringed white ash from and have another 50 staves stored from. For splitters I use hickory which isn't too pricey in board form from the hardwood dealer and he lets me pick through for the better ones. But it's these dang heads.
