Lily and Hermione
I have always found it fascinating how different these two characters are despite coming from similar muggle born backgrounds and similarly brilliant academically ....
Lily Evans (Lily Potter later) is described in general as vivacious, charming, quite cheeky and very popular . Slughorn describes that she gave him quite thoughtful gifts and gave cheeky replies when he said that he would have liked her to be in Slytherin. Obviously , she also supposedly had many female friends and both James and Snape fancied her too . It is also mentioned that Lily was brilliant academically especially in potions and Hagrid mentions she became prefect in 5th year and headgirl in 7th...
Hermione despite her exceptional academic skills is by contrast hardly ever described as vivacious, charming or cheeky. Hermione when she gets irritated comes across as snarky rather than cheeky and and far as her popularity is concerned it is largely connected to her friendship with Harry and her academic brilliance and not the organic female friendship that Lily seemed to have . We hardly see Hermione going around with a girls group.
In fact , in contrast to being charming and vivacious Hermione often comes across as quite high strung, opinionated and at times rigid as well. Hermione never gives the vibe of someone who can be easy to get along with ....
P.S: I don't want this to be a discussion on the whole Snape, Lily and Marauders stuff....
this post is just supposed to be a character contrast between Lily and Hermione
