Looking for Advice: Helping My Dad Get His First Motorcycle 🏍️

Question

Hi everyone! My dad’s dream is to own a Kawasaki motorcycle, and I’d love to surprise him by helping make it happen. The problem is, he doesn’t speak English, so he has a really hard time understanding the process for getting a motorcycle license, insurance, classes, registration, etc.

He usually asks me for help, but I’m a girl who knows basically nothing about motorcycles or motor vehicles either 😭 (I’m working on it!)

I’m hoping to eventually get him a 2026 Kawasaki W175 LTD, but I want to make sure I understand everything he would need before I actually buy the bike.

For those familiar with motorcycles/NC DMV stuff, could someone explain what order I should do everything in from start to finish? For example, is it something like:

  1. Get his motorcycle permit/license
  2. Take a motorcycle safety course
  3. Get insurance
  4. Buy the motorcycle
  5. Register/title it
  6. Get the proper gear
  7. THEN he can actually ride?

Or is there a different/better order I should follow?

I’d also love advice on:

  • Motorcycle permit/license requirements in NC
  • Whether he should take a motorcycle safety course before buying the bike
  • Insurance — when should I get it and what should I expect?
  • Registration/title requirements
  • What gear he absolutely needs
  • Anything I should know about buying a brand-new motorcycle
  • Any other steps I’m completely missing

And if anyone knows of motorcycle classes or resources around Greensboro that are available in Vietnamese (or are easy to navigate with limited English), that would be AMAZING.

I’m basically starting from zero, so I’d really appreciate someone laying out the process for me like “do this first, then this, then this.” 😭

I really want to do this right and make his dream happen. ❤️

TYIA!!
