20M, BSc + DMLT, and still unsure what direction to take

Science/B.Sc/M.Sc

I’m 20 and currently in a rather confusing academic/career situation, and I’d genuinely appreciate some perspective from people who have been through something similar.

I passed Class 12 in 2023. Since then, I’ve had a pretty uncertain academic journey. I’m currently pursuing a BSc (Zoology/Botany/Biology), which should be completed around October 2026, and I’m also doing a DMLT (Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology), which is nearing completion.

The problem is that I’m still not sure what I actually want to build my career around.

I’ve considered several paths:

  • Healthcare/allied health courses such as BPT, BOTT, BMRIT, etc.
  • Government jobs through SSC exams such as CGL/CHSL and other state-level exams.
  • Preparing seriously for NEET and potentially pursuing a professional healthcare degree.
  • Continuing with my existing BSc/DMLT qualifications and finding employment in that field.

A major concern is that I feel I’ve already lost time. I passed 12th in 2023 and didn’t make much progress initially because of indecision and fear of failure. Now I’m worried about making another decision that leaves me in the same position a few years from now.

I’m not necessarily looking for someone to tell me which course to choose. I’d rather understand how people evaluate these decisions realistically—job opportunities, saturation, salary growth, stability, time investment, and the possibility of changing fields later.

For those who have taken a non-linear academic path: how did you eventually decide what to commit to, and what mistakes would you avoid if you were in my position?

Any honest advice—especially from people who have actually worked in these fields—would be appreciated.
