Forward Deployed Engineer: Is this the next major AI engineering career path?
I've been seeing more discussion around the role of Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) and find the career path interesting because it sits between traditional software engineering and direct business problem-solving.
The role isn't simply about building an AI model.
A forward-deployed engineer may need to:
- Understand a client's actual business problem
- Design an appropriate technical solution
- Build and integrate AI systems
- Work with APIs and cloud infrastructure
- Deploy the solution into an existing environment
- Adapt it to the client's workflow
- Measure whether it actually solves the problem
Companies such as Palantir and Scale AI have helped popularize this type of role.
It raises an interesting question about where AI engineering is heading.
As models become increasingly accessible, will the ability to deploy and integrate AI into real organizations become more valuable than simply knowing how to build models?
For engineers already working in AI or software:
What skills would you recommend someone develop to move toward an FDE-type role?
Would it be:
- Strong software engineering?
- Cloud?
- LLM/agent development?
- System design?
- Communication and client-facing skills?
- Business/domain knowledge?
Interested in hearing perspectives from people actually working in these roles.
