What is the value of vim/neovim ?

I'm new to linux and vim and Neovim.

I understand that these are just text editors but I believe there's some level of importance to it in the development community.

Can someone please help me understand why that is ? Also, why is there not much noise about vi editor but there's always some discussion going on about the other two.

What is the key factor to this ?
