Trying to install texture packs and shaders

Hello everyone, just recently, I installed minecraft on my pc but I've been wanting to make my game look a little nicer, but every time I search online it tells me I have to download like optifine or some other stuff which I'm not too familiar with it, could you guys help me figure out and make it a little more simple for a clueless old man like me? Thank you.
