[MF] The Happiest Place in The World

Misc Fiction

Every morning, Bruno sat beneath the fireworks, as children squealed around him, couples laughed, and balloons escaped into the sky. This was the happiest place in the world and, rightly so, it smelled of caramel, sunscreen, freshly baked waffles, and expensive joy.

The gates opened with music loud enough to convince people that bad days were optional. Parents became children again. Teenagers forgot to look bored, and even exhausted adults smiled on cue for photographs.

Bruno watched it all from his usual spot near the museum entrance.

People noticed him constantly.

“Aww,” they'd say.

Someone scratched his head. Someone fed him half a hot dog. Someone clicked a photo and captioned it, “Found the cutest guy here.”

Children hugged him as though affection could be borrowed without being returned. Parents laughed, promised they'd get a dog "someday," and walked away before the thought became inconvenient.

By sunset, everyone had found someone else.

Bruno waited anyway. Not for food. Not for pats. For the old man who had once tied a faded blue ribbon around his neck and whispered, "Wait here. I'll be back."

That was three summers ago.

The ribbon had lost its colour, but hope hadn't. He had memorized the rhythm of the entrance gate. He knew the difference between hurried footsteps and tired ones, between tourists and employees, between people arriving for adventure and people leaving with aching feet and souvenir bags.

Every face deserved a second look. Every grey-haired man deserved a third.

One afternoon, just as the parade music began, Bruno caught a familiar scent. Old leather, peppermint, and the faint smell of pipe tobacco. His ears shot up, and his tail, rusty from disuse, started wagging before he could stop it.

He bolted through the crowd. Children laughed, assuming he was part of the entertainment. He dodged strollers, balloons, and oversized mascots before reaching an old man standing near the fountain.

Bruno jumped, and the man looked down.

"Oh! Hello little fellow," he chuckled, scratching Bruno behind the ears.

Bruno licked his trembling hands and searched his face.

Wrong eyes.

Wrong voice.

Wrong smile.

The man adjusted his hat, apologized to his wife for the interruption, and disappeared into the crowd.

Bruno stood still for a long moment. Then he quietly walked back to his place beneath the fireworks.

The parade continued as if nothing had happened.

The museum building glittered, and confetti floated through the air. Thousands clapped as fictional heroes promised that dreams always came true.

Bruno had learned that dreams were strange things. Some arrived exactly on time, and others got lost on the way.

As darkness settled, an employee sweeping the pathway placed a fresh bowl of water beside him.

"Still waiting, buddy?" he asked softly.

Bruno looked toward the exit. The man sighed, gave him one last pat, and went back to work.

Closing announcements echoed across the park, and shops started shutting their doors. Music faded, and the last family left arguing over whose turn it was to carry the souvenirs.

Silence finally arrived, but Bruno kept watching the gate.

He wasn't foolish. Dogs understood many things that humans didn't. He knew seasons had changed. He knew children he'd once seen in strollers now ran past him carrying roller coaster maps. He knew ribbons faded because time never stopped.

Perhaps the old man had forgotten. Perhaps he couldn't return. Or perhaps life had simply kept the promise from being kept.

But none of it changed where Bruno chose to wait. Every morning, thousands would arrive believing magic was real. They believed in castles, fireworks, talking mice, and happily-ever-afters. But the truest believer in the happiest place in the world wasn't buying a ticket.

He was lying quietly in the happiest place in the world, wearing a faded blue ribbon, convinced that one promise, made in a whisper three summers ago, was still making its way back to him.
