July 2026 Global App Download Breakdown: Mini-dramas surge 40-60% MoM, WhatsApp jumps 70%, and AI hits a growth inflection point

Growth

I’ve been digging into the July global top 30 app download rankings, and there are some really notable shifts in where growth is coming from right now. A category that was still niche not long ago is now outpacing almost every established vertical — and it’s rewriting what a high-growth mobile app looks like in 2026.

Below are the key numbers and takeaways, all pulled from the monthly top 30 report.

WhatsApp: 70%+ MoM growth driven by privacy features and product updates

WhatsApp hit 72.6M+ combined iOS + Android downloads in July, up over 70% month-over-month. The US accounted for 15% of downloads, followed by Indonesia at 9% and Nigeria at 8%.

Two moves drove this huge rebound:

- A late-June launch of usernames, which let users connect with contacts and join groups without sharing their phone number. The privacy upgrade triggered a wave of reinstalls and re-engagement from lapsed users.

- A major product drop on July 22–23 with four high-impact features: standalone iPad registration (no phone required), redesigned car mode, in-chat PDF viewing with annotations, and native music sharing.

TikTok: 34% MoM growth, boosted by live events app momentum

TikTok pulled in 43.7M+ combined downloads in July, up nearly 34% MoM. India contributed 12% of downloads and the US 9%.

A key growth driver was TikTok Pro Events, a standalone app built around global cultural and sporting moments — most notably the World Cup knockout stage and final. The app hit 9M+ downloads in July (up ~50% MoM), with 60% coming from the US. Tournament momentum lifted installs for both the Pro Events app and core TikTok.

The breakout category: Mini-drama apps are on a massive growth run

Nearly every short-form mini-drama app in the top 30 posted strong download growth in July:

- ReelShort: 22.5M+ downloads, ~42% MoM growth. Top markets: Mexico & Brazil (11% each), US (9%)

- DramaWave: 20.8M+ downloads, ~61% MoM growth. Top markets: Indonesia (10%), Turkey & Philippines (7% each)

- DramaBox: 17.1M+ downloads, 41%+ MoM growth. Top markets: US & India (15% each), Philippines (9%)

Two structural catalysts are fueling this boom:

  1. TikTok’s native ad infrastructure for mini-dramas: TikTok launched *Growth Max for Mini Dramas* in late June, a purpose-built native ad platform that lets drama publishers run hook-episode campaigns to drive app installs. Official data shows 52% higher incremental reach vs. off-platform user acquisition, and 10x ad scale when combined with standard app promotion campaigns. This is a huge ecosystem tailwind for the entire category.

  2. AI production lowering costs and accelerating output: Multiple July industry reports flag AI-generated dramas and comic-dramas as a core new growth driver. AI slashes production costs and shortens release cycles, expanding the total content pool and the volume of ad creative available for UA.

One telling monetization trend: all three of the fast-growing apps above use an IAP (in-app purchase) model. Meanwhile, free ad-supported (IAA) mini-drama products like PineDrama and FreeReels saw downloads decline. At the mature end of the market, paid content is outperforming free, volume-focused ad-supported strategies.

Two under-the-radar names to watch (outside the top 30)

- BonusTV: 12.2M+ downloads, 441%+ MoM growth. Top markets: Philippines (21%), Indonesia (14%). It pairs standard drama streaming with task rewards and daily check-ins — a gamified model that’s clearly resonating.

- Melolo: 12M+ downloads, 32%+ MoM growth. Heavily concentrated in Indonesia (74% of downloads), with Thailand at 10%.

Three big takeaways for the global app market

  1. Mini-dramas are now a legitimate global growth engine, still in early penetration

Five mini-drama apps landed in the top 30, most with positive MoM growth. The format has crossed cultural barriers and emerged as the third major growth pillar in mobile, following short video and cross-border e-commerce.

  1. AI apps have gone mainstream, but growth is shifting to differentiated use cases

Four AI-native apps made the top 30, confirming AI tools are no longer a hype cycle but a permanent mainstream category. That said, general-purpose chat AI apps broadly declined month-over-month, while only vertically differentiated products like Claude kept growing. The mass “curiosity trial” phase is over; user growth is now concentrating in products with clear, specific use-case value.

  1. Mature categories are hitting growth ceilings — the market is shifting to stock competition

Established verticals like long-form audio (Spotify), long video (Netflix), online education (Duolingo), and general design tools (Canva) all sit lower in the rankings, and most posted declining MoM downloads. Global user penetration is nearing the ceiling, incremen
