[TOMT] movie with a heroine like molly whuppie

I saw this live action movie in middle school (2003-2005) as part of a folktale section. I remember it was based on a book or folktale about a molly whuppie like character, but I thought her name started with a g and was a bizarre name.

I only remember 2 scenes:

1. early in the film she is asked to fill a bucket with water, but her bucket has a hole in it. she gets around it by using moss to fill the hole. her (step?)sisters or stepmom seem disappointed she figured it out

2. later she and her sister(s) are out in the woods and come across this woman who doesnt rly talk to them but feeds them and gives them a place to sleep. idr if its outside or in a cabin. at some point the heroine realizes the woman is weird and she grabs the bonnets she put on her daughters and puts them on herself and her sisters who are passed out. we then hear the woman mistakenly killing her daughters by clubbing them to death (i remember a crunch noise...) and realizing it later, causing the girls to run away

I remember the girl is young and played by a white girl with disheveled dirty blond (?) hair and outfit. she always seemed kind of dirty? and i thought it took place in the american south but it might be europe i cant remember the accent, i only know it was in english. the entire point was that she was incredibly clever and could get herself out of any situation. the molly whuppie story sounds really familiar as the potential overall plot but i can't find a single movie adaptation of it. please help!
