First-time new SUV buyer – best way to negotiate from Dealers
I am planning to buy my first brand-new vehicle and I am looking for some advice on how to negotiate the best possible out-the-door (OTD) price.
I am currently considering: Toyota RAV4 – 2026 or 2027, Honda HR-V EX-L – 2027
From my research so far, I have received a few suggestions:
- Negotiate with dealers by email/phone instead of visiting them first.
- Avoid unnecessary dealer add-ons and only consider ones that actually provide value.
- Negotiate the total out-the-door price, not the monthly or bi-weekly payment.
A few details about my situation:
- I have a very good credit score.
- I currently have about 2 years remaining on my work permit, although it may be extended.
- I have a 2009 Honda Civic to trade in, but I understand the trade-in value will probably be low.
RAV4 inventory is very limited around me, so I may have to preorder/wait for one.HR-V inventory is much better, and several dealers have vehicles available.
Since this is my first new-car purchase, I would really appreciate advice from experienced buyers or people working in dealerships.
What is the best strategy to get the lowest possible OTD price? Should I contact multiple dealers and ask each one for their best written OTD quote, then use those quotes to negotiate with the others? Also, should I negotiate the vehicle price first and only discuss my trade-in and financing after the purchase price is agreed?
Any other tips, dealer fees to watch out for, or mistakes I should avoid would be appreciated. Thanks!
