I (23F) came out to my friend (22F) thinking we both had feelings for each other
I recently came out to a friend because I have feelings for her and suspected she did for me as well. I’ve known her for about two years and since the very beginning she‘s always asked if I was into girls/why couldn’t I just be into girls (before I came out) because she is bi. Every time we talk, in person or through messages, the tone is always very playful/flirty. I am not just saying this because I want it to be true, I have shown other friends the messages between us and they agreed. I’m not going to share the messages for privacy reasons but I can share a few examples.
One time she was accusing me of being into girls and I denied it and said I was straight. She then told me that I got turned. I asked by who and she said herself.
Another time we were joking about me getting kicked out and I asked if I could stay with her. She replied by saying I could and so I asked if she had a guest room but she said no. Then we joked about us sharing a bed.
And in person she has already told me/alluded to me being her type.
I fought my feelings for her for a long time and tried to tell myself the obvious flirting as just joking around. But at work we both make it a point to be next to each other and she specifically always tried to break the touch barrier by either putting her hand on my shoulder or knee. I don’t thinks this is “just her sense of humor“ because she doesn’t interact with any of our other friends like this.
Anyways a few days before I told her that I‘m bi, I messaged her saying we should start talking. She replied by basically saying she’s down but jokingly said she might cheat. She thought I was joking too. I saw her in person the next day and she was smiling and blushing when she saw me. We did the sand flirting routine we usually do. She again went out of her way to be near me/touch me and I did the same. I initially wanted to tell her then but got too nervous. I ended up telling her a few days after. When I told her I was bi she wasn’t surprised and was blushing. Actually before I even said anything I asked if she knew what I was going to say and she said “that you’re gay?” I told her the reason I came out to her is because I thought it was messed up to ask her to start talking and play it off as a joke. I was also under the impression she felt the same way and I didn’t want to regret never telling her how I felt. I said something about it being her fault I was into girls. So while I didn’t actually outright say that I like her, I think I made it pretty obvious.
Since then (it’s been maybe 3-4 days) it‘s been kind of awkward and she hasn’t talked to me much. I still catch her staring at me at work and we still talk but she doesn’t go out of her way to be near me. When we talk it’s not obvious flirting like usual. Sometimes we’ll have a short conversation and she looks like she wants to say more but doesn’t. I did ask if she was okay and she just said she’s been tired and she gets quiet when she’s tired, but I felt like it was something else. So I started to assume she doesn’t feel the same way and that she is distancing herself from me. If this is the case I will of course respect that, but would be kind of confused. However, today she texted me saying that I should go into work. Side note: they didn’t need extra hands/I wasn’t asked to come in by our boss or anything it was just her basically wanting me there. So now I’m thinking why would she want me there if she’s trying to distance herself from me? Also we used to text a lot but we see each other in person for most of the week so we don’t as much. This is also why I thought it was surprising for her to text me.
I don’t know where to go from here. I’m so confused. Did I misinterpret her behavior? I was thinking about being direct and telling her that I was being serious when I asked about us talking but I don’t want to be weird or like harass her. I would still like to remind friends with her if she’s open to it. I would love to hear your advice!
TL;DR: Came out to a friend who I have feelings for thinking she felt the same way because we‘ve been flirting for over a year. Since I told her that I’m bi and alluded to having feelings for her she has (seemingly) been distancing herself from me. Today she texted me asking me to come into work with the only possible reason being that she wanted me there. This has all unfolded in about a week.
