Having trouble picturing Lateral Alice

I get that she can only move laterally and is sort of strapped to a motorized chair at her desk that travels along an electrified rail. But what exactly does it mean she can "only move laterally?" Do they mean she's like, T-posing and needs to pivot herself to grab things? That it's a standard desk and it just moves her back and forth in front of it like a typewriter?

She's such a minor character that I'm having trouble even finding info online.
