MSLT >8 Min versus 11+ hours documented for your diagnosis

Diagnosis/Testing

I’m wondering for your diagnosis, did your doctor use the diagnosis criteria of the MSLT test having a sleep latency of 8 min or less OR documented 11 hours or more total sleep time?

Some background: I had 2 sleep tests done, one in Feb and one in July. Came back with mild sleep apnea and some restless leg. My sleep latency was 13 minutes. My doctor (also a professor at the University) said it’s not enough for him to diagnose me with IH.

Since March, up until I got my sleep study done in July, I tracked my sleep. Just pen & paper, colouring in the hours spent asleep. Over the 4 months, over 50% of the days I slept for more than 12 hours. I usually sleep 10-11 hours at night and then one or two naps that are a minimum of 2 hours each. Obviously giving him this report was helpful for him, but not enough for a diagnosis.

Right now, he’s come to the conclusion that he doesn’t know what’s causing me to sleep so much. A large chunk is getting blamed on my iron (I’m considered anemic). We are doing a trial sleep apnea mask to see if that helps and then after being I’m going to be prescribed Modafinil. In addition, I’m doing iron therapy with my family doctor.

Basically, if you had a MSLT test that wasn’t representative of your actual life (or your IH initially got blamed on another cause), I’d like to hear how you eventually got your diagnosis.
