Got a very rare toe to finger transfer surgery done - 18hrs in the OT
I recently met with a major accident and lost 3 of my fingers of my right hand until their first joints(from the bottom), middle ring and little. After 2 months of the accident, my surgeon, who's the best in town apparently gave me this option of toe to finger transfer. They just take off a toe and put it as a finger. I wanted to go ahead. After we did some measurements and all, 2nd toe on the right foot is of perfect length to replace the middle finger, so we decided on that. Ring finger and little finger are not that necessary anyway. There was so much of surgery prep. I got into the OT at 6am. They prepped my finger first until afternoon. Then they started working on my toe till the evening. I was conscious until afternoon. After that, I woke up in the ICU at 2am. Apparently they took me out of the OT at 12am. I was in the hospital for 5 days after that.
it's been 2 months since i got it done. the "finger" started acting and looking kinda like a normal finger. foot isn't looking weird either. so win-win.
i believe this surgery was only done tens of times in India prior to this.
very cool story i have isn't it?
