I built an app called Emote and I think it's what social media should actually be
Full transparency: I'm the developer. But hear me out, because I built this because I got tired of the same things you probably did.
I've watched every social platform turn into an engagement machine — the constant performance, the algorithmic feed, the dopamine slot machine with notifications. I wanted to build something that felt different. Something actually intimate.
Emote is a mood-check-in app *just* for your close friends. No feed, no followers, no audience, no likes. You pick a mood (happy, chill, drained, anxious, overwhelmed, etc.), add a note if you want, and share it with people you mutually follow. They react back — a hug, a "same", a "here for you" — and it's gone in 24 hours.
What I focused on when building it:
* **Tiny, intentional network.** Only people you mutually follow see your stuff. It's genuinely intimate, not a broadcast.
* **Couple space.** A private corner just for two people. Seeing their mood marked with a heart hits different.
* **Your private diary.** All your moods stay with you in a color-filled calendar — a real reflection of how you actually felt.
* **Actually private.** No ads, no tracking, no data harvesting. Just built for you and the people you trust.
* **Friction is the feature.** Takes 10 seconds to check in. No infinite scroll, no algorithm. Just "how are you feeling?"
It's completely free, iOS only for now. I'd love to hear what you think if you try it.
