Badly healed injury is leading to pain when riding…

Education & Training

Hey everyone! I’m getting back into horseback riding after not doing so for years. I have my 5th(?) lesson this weekend. But I want some advice.

I have trouble with one of my ankles. Part of my lesson is holding the position for posting and two point while walking a lap. I sprained my ankle enough in 2020 to leave me barely able to walk for a few weeks, and never got physical therapy for it. My family was the “ice, elevate, get over it” type.

That now affects me deeply in my riding. When I do any posting or holding a post/two point position, my ankle is screaming and trying to roll outward, which happens additionally as my natural standing position isn’t straight feet, but more outward. The lesson horse that my trainer has me on recently is also more sensitive to leg cues, including me brushing against him with my ankle, leading to him being confused when the pain gets worse and my foot starts pointing outward again.

I purchased a moderate support ankle brace for now, but the pain is right where I sprained it six years ago. Any advice for this..?
