Long shot on IDing a car

Was cruising through a small town in northern California (Fortuna, California)and passed a car I didn't recognize and can't for the life of me figure out what it was. Wondering if anyone has any ideas based on details below. Guessing it's something really obscure or maybe a kit car. A friend lives nearby and is on a mission to try and find it.

1950's - 1970's styling looked British or maybe Italian

Black 2 door hard top coupe

Sounded like it had a decent v8 but unsure

Rear panel was oval with what I thought were horizontal tail lights

Car appeared very short and curvy like a c3 Corvette but shorter

I could see a small rectangular badge on the hood, it was silver but I couldn't read anything
