Oscar race 2027

Prediction

As an actor and I hope future director, I’m always interested in which film will be awarded during the long awaited award season. I follow the discourse since a few months and I see that some people are really pessimistic towards Dune part three chances which surprises me.

Yes, we have a very competitive year and Dune part two was less nominated than part one. But it doesn’t necessarily diminish Dune part three’s award chances. As we all know The Two Towers got less nominations than The fellowship of the ring and yet, The Return of the King got rightfully awarded in plenty of categories. We have examples of the academy being less interested in second parts of a trilogy than the first and third one.

Writing off the third installment of the Dune trilogy in many categories other than sound or VFX seems really hasty. It’s worth noting that Dune part 2 was released in March, one year before the Oscars.

Part three, in the contrary, will be released right at the start of the award season. With a great character driven story (even with big changes, the adaptation will have at its core the characters emotional and dramatic journey) who seems to have pushed even further its visual spectacle, material for great acting performances, the technical excellence proven in the previous two films, that great release date and the conclusion aspect of the trilogy, I think that the fervor people right now have for The Odyssey will be transferred and benefit to Dune.

Despite a few people thinking that the academy don’t like dune because three or four of them said they didn’t watched part 2 and it got less nominated than part 1, I’m sure that it is a strong award contenders and not only on technical categories this year (I mean by that best picture and director).

The Odyssey will obviously have many nominations, it’s a great cinematic achievement, but I think Dune will probably take away many categories from it with how their strategy is going.

thanks for reading this, and I hope to hear other people’s thoughts on this !
