Learning to drive
So I (F20) have been recently learning to drive. I want my license before I turn 21 in early December. To be honest, before I started taking medication for my ADHD, driving was out of the question. My anxiety and lack of focus made me genuinely dangerous and my parents refused.
Now I’m in university and working but not having a license is my biggest stressor and makes me feel dependant. It feels like I have my life together but that’s the one thing holding me astronomically back. I have motivation and drive now with being medicated and I want to have freedom and do other things than school or work!
My main issue with driving is all the rules, the unspoken ones, the ones that contradict each other and “it’s common sense” with things like 4 way stops don’t compute in my brain. How do you guys manage it??
I can now park well and am super confident driving in neighborhood areas or even highways straight, but as soon as I get on the roads or traffic lights LET ALONE UNPROTECTED TURNS I freeze up. I also struggle with constantly thinking I’m in the wrong. If I’m going slow and cautious and someone’s close behind me, I’ll speed up in panic. It just feels like there’s so much to impossibly take in and learn when driving. I struggle with hyper fixating on one thing while ignoring the rest around me. I’m slowly but surely getting more confident but still need help.
Do you guys have any advice? Things that helped you??
