My boyfriend is depressed
First of all excuse my English, it's not my native language. My boyfriend told me today that he is depressed but when I asked why, he wanted to end the conversation because he was tired. I told him that I understand, that I would gladly listen if he ever wants to open up with me in the future. The problem is he never does. He always keeps everything to himself, and at this point I'm really worried because I know he's been depressed for years, even if he didn't tell me as clearly as he did today. I don't know what to do, because I feel really frustrated about not knowing how I can help him. I love him deeply and I really want him to be happy. I don't want to pressure him, I know insisting wouldn't help at all, but the frustration I feel creates the urge to insist until he opens up, even if I would never do that. There's something else. I'm a super expressive person when it comes to my feelings, I verbalise what I feel in order to make sense out of it, and I cry, and I laugh, I'm very expressive and if I feel something I externalise it very intensely and genuinely. That, with the fact that he rarely opens up with anyone, has created a dynamic that I don't like, because he feels that he can't open up with me and that he always has to comfort me. He says he can't open up and be vulnerable with me if I'm crying or really sad. I think that my capacity of comforting him is not incompatible with me expressing my feelings intensely. But he says he can't do that because he feels the urge to comfort me when he sees me having a hard time, that it would be easier for him to be vulnerable if he saw me more stable and calm. This creates a dynamic where I feel that I show him too much and that he shows me almost nothing in return. And he probably feels overwheImed by my expressiveness and doesn't know how to be vulnerable around someone like me. I don't know how to manage this situation without sacrificing my expressiveness, but of course I don't like that he feels that way. What can I do? I know it's a dynamic that depends on both of us, but I want to do whatever is under my control to improve this. I would appreciate kind and constructive advice. I just want him to be happy and to be comfortable being vulnerable around me sometimes too. It breaks my heart to know that he feels depressed and feeling unable to help him
