For people that grew up in difficult family situations, what steps did you take to be independent?

Hello all, the question is basically the title.

I know ppl who work full time in college to support large families which leaves them little time for school and starting their actual career. It's a pretty unfortunate situation.

For those who've been in situations like this, how have you gotten off your feet and what did that timeline look like?
