Thoughts on parental control?
I recently heard a story from a friend of mine regarding how much his parent controls him, and i want people on the internet to share your opinion on if it's too much/too controlling. So the whole situation is as follows. For reasons I will call him Bob and he is a student currently in high school in the united states, and he have very traditional asian parents. So Bob was talking to me about his home situation and how it's affecting his mental health and how stressful it is to live in that household. He basically said that ever since he was young he was forced into many acitivities that he didn't have any interest in, such as piano lessons, drum lessons, and art lessons. As you know asian parents are very strict and want their kids to succeed for obvious reasons, and me myself have experienced this too. But now he is in high school and getting ready to apply for college and actually locking in onto a future career and such. He told me that since high school started, he was on a strict schedule set by his parents, he had to follow everything that his parent say. He told me that often time he felt like a robot and is just running the commands his parent set, he even said he has no emotion, no feelings, and no consciousness. He explained to me that his dad is commanding which club to join, which competition to go to, and which student and teacher he should be friend and good with. So in the end his reputation and resume for college would look stellar. It truly is sad and i feel sympathy towards him, and everytime i saw him at school, it is like he is drained of the youthful energy, and his eyes just doesn't have the light in them anymore. He later said that is not even the extreme part, and even more crazy is that in their household, his parent in order to maximize his chances for good colleges, has banned him from logging onto certain websites (which includes multiple social media websites, gaming sites, and other sites deemed unfit for education). He also said there is very strict screen time allowed and that time is 1 hour only everyday, and this 1 hour time period is the only time he can really socialize. We used to hangout pretty often in middle school, but now he doesn't come out at all and say he prioritize education more than socialization. Like i mentioned that asian parents are infamous for prioritizing child's education more than anything, but as an asian myself and having asian parents, his situation to me feels a bit extreme. I argue that yes education is important but if it is at the cost of sacrificing friends and other freedom i don't think it is good for both the kid and the parent in the end. But the question still remains is his parent way too controlling? If so where should the line be drawn?
