Delays in Swapping in New Tabs or Pages

I have just started to notice that Chrome, either in Google searches or new YouTube pages, is experiencing significant delays and hangups when I try to search a phrase or launch a new tab. This is new. It is as though the system gets hung up on a white nothingness. I can usually tweak it and cause it to launch, so it is not (yet) a fatal problem, but I am wondering if others have rung into it and what they are doing.
