You have more freedom from other people in the city than the suburbs

If you encounter an asshole in a place like New York, you'll never see them again. Meanwhile in the suburbs, you're permanently stuck with asshole neighbors and it becomes a battle of willpower until someone moves out first.

I grew up in a suburb full of tacky rich people who are trust-fund babies and they it was making me depressed. I finally snapped and moved to the city, which made my life a lot better.

I don't hate the suburbs as a concept, but the people who live in the suburbs are the reason why I'll never live in one again. I'm perfectly fine with having to pay higher taxes.
