How do you deal with feeling left out?
I’ve been okay with being single for a long time. Lonely, yes, but manageable. I had my studies, my work, my family, and a few good friends. It felt like enough most days.
Then we had this impromptu outing with all my friends and their partners. It was unplanned and supposed to be light and fun. And it was, in many ways. I’m really happy for them. Their partners seem kind and wellmatched. I mean that genuinely.
What stayed with me afterwards wasn’t the big stuff. It was the small, almost invisible care. The way someone would automatically turn to their partner to ask about keys, or check on a cough from last night, or ask if an old injury was still bothering them. Tiny things. Things you wouldn’t necessarily bring up with friends. Just the quiet, everyday way of being looked after and looking after someone.
Watching that made something ache. I felt very single in that moment. Not in a dramatic, “I’m incomplete” way, but in a quieter, heavier one. Like I was standing a little outside a part of life that everyone else seemed to move through so naturally. That soft, practical closeness. The kind that doesn’t need announcing.
I know I’ll be fine without a partner. I’ve been fine. But that evening made the absence feel more real than it has in a while. It was bittersweet in the truest sense, happy for them, and a little sad for myself at the same time.
I just needed to put it somewhere.
For those who are at a point in their life where they’re truly content with being with themselves, I applaud you and I’m happy for you but this is for those who do enjoy being alone but feel that pang of emptiness and a need for companionship once in a while.
