Just finished Expedition 33, thoughts

Spoiler

I read a lot about this before buying it. Everyone said it was really good, the only thing I was unsure about was the turn based combat. I don’t play those games. I play story games, RDR2, Ghost of Tsushima, Last of Us, so I wasn’t sure this was for me.

Turns out the combat is fine. You have to parry and dodge so you’re actually doing something the whole time. I was bad at it in the beginning, my timing was off, but after a few hours it started to click. By the end I wasn’t dodging at all, I just parried everything. I played on story difficulty because I wanted the story and the music, so it never got too hard. Pictos and lumina I understood fine, no issues there.

Act 1 is a bit slow. Then Gustave dies. I was using him in every fight and I was used to how he plays, so when Renoir showed up and killed him I didn’t know what to do after that. From Act 2 I couldn’t stop playing. I was on it every night after work and finished it in 26 hours, took me about a week.

All the characters are good. Gustave was my favourite, then Verso and Maelle, Lune was good too. I barely used Monoco and Sciel. Voice acting was really good, I kept thinking I knew the voices but I didn’t check the cast until Act 2.

!The reveal was mad, I did not see it coming. At the end I picked Verso. He was the saddest character in the game for me, none of it was his fault and he never asked for any of it, so I wanted him to be free. I didn’t really think about the other ending. It changed how I saw the whole game.!<

The good thing is nothing stays confusing. There’s a lot going on but by the end everything makes sense. Kind of like Breaking Bad.

Soundtrack is amazing, I’ve been listening to Une Vie à T’aimer a lot since I finished. Also no bugs or crashes, everything worked fine.

Game of the year for me. It’s up there with RDR2 as my favourite game now, which I didn’t expect from a turn based game.bb

What did you all think of it?
