If you're new to cars, you might know the basic parts like the **engine, tyres, headlights and doors**, but there are quite a few exterior components that have specific names.

I recently came across a useful breakdown of car body components, so I thought I'd put together a simple reference for anyone who wants to understand the basic parts of a vehicle.

# Common vehicle components and what they do

1. Hubcap

A **hubcap** is a cover fitted over the center area of a wheel. It mainly improves the appearance of the wheel and helps protect the wheel hub and fasteners from dirt and moisture.

2. Tire

The **tire** is the rubber part that touches the road. It provides grip and helps the car accelerate, brake, and turn safely. Proper tire pressure and good tread are important for safe driving.

3. Side Mirror

The **side mirror** helps the driver see vehicles, people, and objects beside and behind the car. It is especially useful when changing lanes, turning, or parking.

4. Quarter Panel

The **quarter panel** is the body panel around the rear side of the car. It is located near the rear wheel and connects the side of the vehicle with the rear body section.

5. Tail Lights

**Tail lights** are located at the rear of the vehicle. They make the car easier to see from behind, especially at night and in low-visibility conditions. The rear light assembly may also contain brake and indicator lights.

6. Rear Bumper

The **rear bumper** protects the back of the vehicle from damage during minor or low-speed impacts. It can also contain parking sensors, reflectors, or other components depending on the car.

7. Cowl Panel

The **cowl panel** is the area between the hood and the windshield. It helps cover and protect components around the windshield wiper system and helps prevent leaves and debris from entering unwanted areas.

8. Fog Lights

**Fog lights** are designed to provide additional lighting in poor visibility conditions. They are positioned lower on the front of many vehicles to illuminate the road closer to the car.

9. Quarter Window

A **quarter window** is a smaller window located near the front or rear section of the side windows. It provides additional visibility around the vehicle and can also be part of the vehicle's overall design.

10. Window

The **car window** provides visibility for the driver and passengers while helping protect the cabin from rain, wind, dust, and outside elements. Many modern cars use power windows operated by switches.

11. Fender

The **fender** is the curved body panel around the wheel. It helps protect the vehicle body from mud, water, stones, and other road debris thrown up by the tire.

12. Fender Liner

The **fender liner** sits inside the wheel well behind the fender. It helps protect the surrounding components and bodywork from mud, water, dirt, and road debris.

13. Headlight

The **headlight** illuminates the road ahead when driving at night or in poor lighting conditions. Headlights also help other road users notice the vehicle.

14. Front Bumper

The **front bumper** is fitted at the front of the vehicle and helps reduce damage during minor impacts. Modern bumpers may also house parking sensors, cameras, fog lights, and other equipment.

15. Grille

The **grille** is located at the front of the car. It allows airflow into the front section of the vehicle and helps provide air to the cooling system. It is also an important part of a car's exterior design.

**Why These Vehicle Components Matter?**

Knowing basic vehicle component names can be useful for every car owner. If you need bodywork after an accident, for example, knowing the difference between a fender, quarter panel, bumper, grille, and fender liner can make it much easier to understand what needs repair or replacement.

It can also help when discussing your car with a mechanic, buying replacement parts, or simply learning more about how your vehicle is built.
