Fresh grad with a year of experience, how do I pick a specialisation?
A year in, interned in final year and stayed on.
Stack: Python, FastAPI, Postgres, Kafka, Kubernetes on AWS, hosted model APIs. Shipped a system that's in real use and replaced a manual process.
So I can build and run things. What I haven't done is anything below the API layer, no C++, no GPU work.
A fair bit of the development was AI-assisted, mostly Claude. It's how everyone works now, but it does make me want to pick something I understand properly rather than just ship quickly.
Questions:
- Are there companies in India doing the deeper infrastructure and performance work, or is it mostly abroad?
- Is a master's the usual route, or can you get there from a job?
- How did you pick your area, planned or accidental?
- Is a year too early to be asking?
