Which laptop should I buy for Civil Engineering? Budget workhorse ($400) vs. Modern premium ($1,100 CAD
Hey everyone,
I’m going into my 2nd year of Civil Engineering and need a laptop that will comfortably last me through the rest of my degree. I will be doing a lot of 3D modeling and rendering in programs like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and Civil 3D.
My department recommends a Windows machine with an i7, at least 16GB RAM (though I want more), a 1TB SSD, and a dedicated GPU.
I have access to two great Lenovo workstation deals through my school/local seller (prices in CAD), and I'm torn between saving money and future-proofing. Both have 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, but the core specs are very different:
Option 1: The Budget Workhorse ($400 CAD)
- CPU: 11th Gen Intel Core i7-11800H
- RAM / Storage: 32GB RAM / 1TB SSD
- GPU: NVIDIA T1200 4GB
- Display: 15.6" FHD (1080p)
- My thoughts: This feels like an absolute steal for $400. However, I'm worried the older 11th Gen chip will run hot, be heavy, and have terrible battery life while I'm walking around campus.
Option 2: The Modern Premium ($1,100 CAD)
- CPU: Intel Core Ultra 7 155H
- RAM / Storage: 32GB RAM / 1TB SSD
- GPU: NVIDIA RTX A500 4GB
- Display: 16" WQUXGA (higher res, 16:10 aspect ratio)
- My thoughts: The 16:10 screen would be amazing for extra CAD toolbar space, and the newer Ultra 7 chip should give me much better battery life and longevity. But it is $700 more.
Is the Ultra 7 and RTX A500 combo worth spending the extra $700 for the next three years of engineering school, or should I just buy the $400 one and deal with the worse battery life and older screen?
Thanks in advance for the help!
