Tank Track Marks

I've used milliputt and a spare tank track to imprint tank track marks on a base. I'm wondering how you would paint the marks? I've got it in mind to just paint them dark brown, and then paint gloss varnish in the mark to make it look wet. Any recommendations for muddy tank marks?
