I (23M) told a very close friend (24F) that an old friend of hers, who is also a very close friend of mine, has been saying really bad things about her for the past 2 months, and since then, she has been ghosting me.
This is my first time posting, so I may be doing this wrong, but anyway!
I met this girl last year in October; let's call her B, and I was already friends with C (fake name too). I became friends with B and she with C extremely fast, and we started hanging out a lot, and I caught feelings for B and confessed this past January. She didn't reciprocate those feelings, but we tried to maintain the commitments we had with a professor. She realized that she couldn't do it because we were just too weird with each other, and we were being overly mean to each other(It's unimportant what was said during that confession between us). She asked me for some space, and I agreed we needed it if we were to remain friends. During those weeks, C was there to help me and talk to me, and she kept saying I should drop B even though they were friends at the time because it wasn't worth the stress and agony I was going through at the time. At this time, B and C stopped talking to each other because they just didn't reach out to each other.
B reached out three weeks later; we met up, spoke a bit, and decided to maintain our commitments with the professor while trying to rebuild our friendship, since the foundation was pretty shaky. Pretty much, when I met her, I caught feelings right away. For months, we were extremely uncomfortable and awkward and couldn't really talk to each other; we couldn't really hang out outside of our commitments because we didn't know how to interact with each other, and she never wanted to address the elephant in the room.
After certain situations with other people, she started warming up to me, and things got a little better until her semester was over (I had already graduated, but I was just studying to take the LSAT), and she told me she didn't really want to talk until the day I took her to the airport (since she had asked me a month prior) I took her and it was extremely awkward although she tried to make it as bearable as possible. After she came back, we didn't talk, and I became frustrated because it felt like I was trying to maintain this friendship while she was just letting it die, so I confronted her and asked if that's what she wanted. She said that's the opposite of what she wanted, but she was going through something that she couldn't really talk about. She said she'd love to tell me when she could and that she wanted to restart this friendship for real, and that's exactly what happened. Between late May and Early August, we have grown so much, and she has said that even during the rough patch she still considered me one of her best friends and that I was like the brother she never had, and that made me really happy because all I wanted was for our friendship to feel real and comfortable again. During that time, we were rebuilding our friendship, C and her best friend kept telling me really awful things, such as: she's using you for attention, she's sexually frustrated, she's so ugly; how could you ever like her, and that she was only using me to experiment since she had no prior experience with men. I have gotten into massive fights with both over this and I have told them to keep her name out of their mouths and that if they hadn't spoken to her in so long they shouldn't be commenting on things like that. Over time, I told B some of the things they had been saying to me (I would also like to point out that C has been a lifesaver for me and that they have kept me going through really rough times).
Last Wednesday, B asked me to make a list of things they have said about her and about me. I told her I didn't think that was a good idea, as she wouldn't like what they said, and she said it was fine; she didn't really care, so it wouldn't hurt her. I kept telling her I thought it was a bad idea, but she assured me it was fine, so I made the list. We met last Friday, and after hanging out, she asked me for the list, and I told her everything that was in it. She, in general, responded fine; some things she fought back on, but in general we were laughing and just calling it ridiculous. I had my hand on her knee the whole time, and she even joked about it. When I took it out, she said, "Don't overthink it; you know I don't mind," so I thought everything was fine. When I told her about the comments they made about her appearance, she became quieter and expressed some insecurities she has, but said it didn't matter because what mattered was how I felt at the time, and I agreed. During the conversation, she thanked me for not saying anything until now because I knew she was going through a rough patch and that she knew I was only trying to protect her and that she would do the same for me.When it was time to leave her house, I asked her if she was fine with everything I told her, and she said she was and that I didn't need to worry and that she would text me the next day about something, and so we hugged, and I left.
The next day came, and she said nothing, so I reached out, and she didn't say anything. I didn't find it strange since on the weekends she's usually doing things, so I decided to text on Monday; still nothing. I found it strange, but ok she does go MIA once in a while. Wednesday, I texted her asking if she's ok since she's been missing for a couple of days and still hasn't said anything, so I started freaking out, and yesterday I sent her a text asking if I had hurt her with the things I told her and that I never wanted to hurt B, much less on purpose and that I really value her as my friend. She replied this morning, saying that I didn't do anything, that she knows I didn't say those things about her, and that she swore she was fine and that those comments had only come as a surprise. She also said that she hasn't been doing well lately and that she has been taking some space for herself and that she wants to enjoy her freedom before university starts again. Then she asked me how I was. I replied, saying that I understood and that if she needed anything, I would gladly help her in any way I could, but that I would give her the space that she needed. Since then, nothing.
I guess my question is: have I screwed everything up again? I don't want to go back to the awkward phase that lingered over us for so long after we had finally built a fantastic foundation under us. I feel like I screwed up big time, even after she said that I didn't, because she's not the type to really express her emotions.
TL;DR: Told a friend a couple of mean things some friends of mine said about her, and she hasn't really communicated since.
