The Golden twins

The gymnasium had been transformed into something out of a fairy tale, all twinkling lights and gauzy fabric draped from the rafters. The prom committee had outdone themselves, but honestly, the whole thing felt like a formality. Everyone knew who was taking the crowns home.

Corey stood near the punch bowl, adjusting his bow tie for the hundredth time. His tux fit perfectly across his broad shoulders, the result of years of swimming and baseball. Across the room, Carlie was laughing with her friends, her strapless red dress hugging every curve she'd earned from track and volleyball. They'd always been a matched set, the kind of twins that made people do double-takes, same dark hair, same sharp jawlines, same easy confidence that came from being good at everything they touched.

The announcement came right on schedule. "Your Senior Prom King and Queen... Corey and Carlie!"

The applause was thunderous, but underneath it ran a current of snickering. Someone shouted "Kiss her!" and the suggestion rippled through the crowd. Corey felt his face flush as he walked to the stage, meeting Carlie at the steps. Her smile was tight, her eyes carrying a hint of something he couldn't quite read.

They accepted their crowns, posed for photos, and endured the slow dance that tradition demanded. Corey's hand rested on the small of Carlie's back, and he was acutely aware of how warm her skin felt through the thin fabric.

"This is so fucking weird," Carlie murmured against his shoulder.

"Tell me about it," Corey replied, trying to keep space between their bodies. "At least we get the parking spot by the gym for the rest of the year."

Carlie snorted, and some of the tension broke. After the dance ended, they made their escape to the hotel where the after-party was raging. Someone had booked a suite on the top floor, and the place was packed with their classmates. Corey lost track of Carlie in the crowd, content to accept congratulations and sip warm beer from a red cup.
