pressure of forced choice
I received an Asperger’s syndrome diagnosis because this diagnosis is still given in my country. When I use this term, neurotypical people accuse me of being a N•zi sympathizer (even though I am not a N•zi sympathizer; I only use the term because it is the diagnosis I was given).
However, when I say “autism,” neurotypical people look at me with pity and treat me as though I were severely disabled. When you mention autism in a social setting, people may even act as though you are crazy and tell you that you have lost your mind.
(The clearest example of this was when I broke my finger: while my mother was waiting at the hospital, she told the nurses that I had a form of autism. The nurses looked at me with pity, and when I went to get an X-ray, they took me in first and gave me strange looks.)
I hate that my mother tells other people about my diagnosis. Seven people in my social circle learned about my diagnosis within eight months.
Including people such as; municipal police, nurses the number exceeds ten in eight months if I count people outside my social circle.
I think the WHO bringing all of us together under the “spectrum” forces us into a choice: either we look like N•zi sympathizers or we are perceived as people with severe disabilities. I feel as though I am being pressured into one of two roles: either I will be seen as a N•zi supporter, or I will be seen as severely disabled.
